Again! Cancer has proven me right! It is blind, you agree with me right? why would it be our pretty Lady, Mrs. Funmilayo Olayinka. Why would it be anyone else anyways? No respect at all. Is it money we didn't spend, or fasting and Prayers? Cancer, you just chose to take her home so early, God is watching you.
The ravaging effects of Cancer have long been a recurring decimal and several Nigerian families like "the Sarakis' of Kwara" have experienced the agony of losing relations to the disease. It has become a common disease to a lot of people because it has touched them somehow, caused them some kind of pain, directly or indirectly.
It is a class of diseases in which a group of cells display uncontrolled growth, invasion that intrudes upon and destroys adjacent tissues, and sometimes metastasis, or spreading to other locations in the body via lymph or blood. There are various types of cancer, cervical, ovarian, breast, lung, cancer of the blood, and prostrate cancers, among others. However, the most common type of cancer in Nigeria today are breast, cervical and ovarian cancer.
There are two major causes of cancer; environmental factor and others caused by hereditary genetic. Some of the common environmental factors leading to cancer as indicated include: tobacco, bad dieting especially calories, infections, radiation, lack of physical activity, and environmental pollutants. These environmental factors, according to experts cause or enhance abnormalities in the genetic material of cells.
Although, cancer has been described as a killer disease, experts say when detected early, patients diagnosed with these cancers may be cured. Unfortunately, only a few people especially women do medical check ups.
A change in our attitude can curb the effect of cancer in our environment. Things should be put in place, to meet the challenges and diagnoses of the different forms of cancer. We all don't have to die! Cancer-screening centres, well- equipped and more enlightenment should be facilitated and encourage by government and individuals.
And to get more enlightenment on Cancer, tune in to Lagos Television, LTV 8 available on DSTV channel 256 to watch an exclusive interview with Mrs Funke Fortune..a cancer survival on The Lola Show, 6:30pm today, Friday.
