*Member hopes for continuity of youth parliament
To strengthen all
efforts geared towards promoting the union and participation of the youth in
the process of decision making, policy formulation and implementation, the Lagos
state government recently inaugurates its youth parliament at the state house
of Assembly, Alausa, Ikeja.
The event, organised by the Ministry of Youth,
Sports and Social Development, had in attendance Special Adviser to the
Governor, Office of Youth and Social Development, Dolapo Badru, who explained
that the youth parliament was convened so that youth could deliberate and pass
their resolution to the executive or legislative arms of government for
necessary attention.
Deputy Speaker, Lagos House of Assembly, Kolawole
Taiwo, who represented the Speaker, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, stressed that the
legislative session would help the youth parliaments have information on how
the house is being run and enable them gather idea which they could share with
the leaders.
During the legislative session, Remi Bello,
representing Agege Constituency 1 emerged the speaker while Nariwo Oluwaseun
became the deputy.
In his speech, Bello, the youth speaker, pledged
that the members would not let the government and the youths down but would
ensure the yearnings of youths are heard. “It is another force that is being called by
the Lagos state government to give the youth the chance to actually come up
with recommendations because they have just realized that no matter their
ideas, the youths need to be carried along. We go beyond the house by playing a
practical role and because we are closer to the people, they can easily relate
with us” he added.
Meanwhile, member of the youth parliament, Ayanchi Amaka representing Amuwo Odofin Constituency 2 said "youth parliament has come to stay but the only challenge would be a change in government". She pleads to the state government to ensure that the parliament gets all the needed support and prays that subsequent government would strength it.
The house members were drawn from different
constituency in Lagos which in total is forty members. The Lagos state youth parliamentarians are to
serve 2years each in the house.
